• NASA has a composite picture of the Earth as viewed from space at night. This is incredible! It's a big picture, so may take a while to load on a slower link.
• Rachel Robbins' Desktop Pictures -- Rich especially loves the Garden Steps picture (part of "Rachel's Pics Set 1").
• Astronomy picture of the day -- a different picture of the cosmos every day!
• MacDesktops -- Pictures in a variety of categories.
• Kindground -- a gallery of original digital art.

• ResExcellence Desktop Pictures
• NASA Landsat Earth Pictures -- these aren't strictly desktop pictures, but fascinating Quicktime animations zooming in and out of Earth features from space. There are some standalone pictures too. Well worth a look if you've got a speedy connection.
• TekNoel -- designs from Noel Rubin.
• Mandolux -- a wide variety of pictures and digital art.

Apple also provides some desktop pictures with the MacOS (pre-X). Check your Apple Extras folder, and also see your MacOS distribution CD (try searching for "pictures").
